A flat bill is one of those hats people have strong feelings about, and a lot of those feelings go back to one hat that never sat right. We think most of them deserve a second shot. Getting it right comes down to a few details: how deep the crown sits, how you set the snap, and whether mesh or solid panels suit the way you spend your day. Here's what's worth knowing before you pick one of our flat bill hats, so the one you buy is the one you keep wearing.

What Is a Flat Bill Hat?

A flat bill hat is a cap with a straight brim that comes flat instead of pre-curved. Most have a structured, high crown that holds its shape on its own, six-panel construction, and an adjustable snapback closure, which gives the front a clean, squared-off look that shows off a logo, patch, or graphic.

What's the Difference Between a Flat Bill Snapback, a Flat Bill Trucker Hat, and a Foam Trucker?

It mostly comes down to what the panels are made of and how the front is decorated.

Our flat bill snapbacks are solid fabric all the way around, a 65% polyester / 35% cotton blend, with an embroidered logo on the front. Our flat bill trucker hats keep the same structured front panels and visor but switch to mesh on the sides and back, and they wear an embroidered patch up front. Foam truckers get their name from the foam front panel, which gives a smooth surface to print on, so the graphic is screen-printed right on the face of the hat.

How Should a Flat Bill Hat Fit?

It should sit level on your head, with the front just above your eyebrows, and it shouldn't shift around when you look over your shoulder. If it keeps creeping up, or there's a gap between the sweatband and your forehead, it isn't sitting right yet.

Why does crown height matter as much as head size?

Because the crown decides how deep the hat goes on your head and how tall it looks once it's there. Our flat bill snapback hats and truckers have a high crown, so they sit deeper and stand taller in the front. On a bigger head, a high crown looks proportional and stays put. On a smaller head, it'll look a bit taller, which some people like and some people don't.

That's also what "one size fits most" really comes down to. The snaps take care of how big around your head is, and the crown depth takes care of the rest. When a hat perches, it's usually the depth, and loosening the strap won't fix that.

How do you set the snapback so you don't have to keep fiddling with it?

All of our flat bill hats, truckers and foam truckers included, close with an adjustable snapback, so this works the same way on every one of them: Get it right once and then leave it alone. Put the hat on, pull it down to where the front sits comfortably, and close the strap on whichever snap holds it there without squeezing your temples. From then on, take it on and off by the brim and crown instead of popping the closure every time.

A few things to check while you're at it:

  • Snug, not tight: if there's a red line on your forehead after an hour, let it out a snap.
  • Sitting level: the front panel should sit straight across your forehead, not tipped back toward the top of your head. If it tips back, pull it down a little before you close the strap.
  • Set it the way you'll wear it: if you usually wear your hat backward or with your hair tied back, set the snap like that, since the snap that feels right can change.

Mesh or Solid Panels: Which One Should You Pick?

If you're going to be out in the heat, go mesh. The mesh on a trucker lets air move through the back of the hat, and you'll feel that on a summer job site, walking a car show all afternoon, or spending the weekend at the lake. A solid snapback keeps a fuller, cleaner shape all the way around, so it's the better pick when you want to look put together, or on a cool, windy day when you'd rather not have air coming through the back of your head.

Honestly, most people who wear hats every day end up with both.

Flat Bill vs. Curved Bill: Which Is Better?

Neither one, really. It depends on how you spend your day and what you like looking at in the mirror. A flat bill sits straight out from your forehead and lines up with the structured front panel, which gives it that clean, squared-off shape a lot of people wear flat bills for in the first place. A curved bill wraps in closer to your face and follows the line of your brow, giving it a more rounded, low-key look and putting the shade right around your eyes and cheeks.

If you split your time between both kinds of days, it makes sense to keep a couple of our curved bill hats in the mix too. And when you're out in full sun for hours, like fishing or working the yard, one of our straw hats will cover a lot more than any cap can.

Should You Bend a Flat Bill?

That's up to you, but we'd wear it flat for a couple of weeks before you decide. Once a brim's been bent, it pretty much never goes back to perfectly flat, so you want to be sure. If you still want a curve after living with it for a while, shape it slowly with your hands instead of folding it hard down the middle. And if you already know you like a curve, you'll probably be happier just starting with a curved bill.

How Do You Wear a Flat Bill Hat?

Most people wear it straight on and pulled down enough that it sits on the head, not above it. Backward works too, especially when you're under a welding hood or leaning into an engine bay. Tilted to the side is your call.

As for what to wear it with, you don't have to overthink it. Say you're a tradesman going from the job site to the truck to the parts counter in a work shirt, jeans, and boots; a trucker with an embroidered patch fits right in. At a car show or a tattoo convention in a tee and shorts, a foam trucker with a bold print can be the loudest thing you're wearing, and that's fine. With one of our men's flannels, a general rule works well: If the flannel's pattern is busy, keep the hat simple, and if the flannel's plain, let the hat do more.

How Do You Clean a Flat Bill Hat?

By hand, with a damp cloth. Our hats are surface washable only, so keep them out of the washing machine, the dishwasher, and the dryer, and away from high heat in general.

The sweatband is the first place to look, since that's where the sweat and grime from a long day end up. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then let the hat air dry. On the outside, go easy around embroidered patches and screen-printed graphics by dabbing and wiping instead of scrubbing. For everyday dust, a soft brush takes care of most of it.

How you store it matters too. Hang your hats on hooks or stack them front to back on a shelf, so the front panels aren't getting squashed in a bag or under a helmet.

Picking Your Next Flat Bill

Think about where you'll wear it most and go from there. If it's hot days outside, grab a trucker. If you want one hat that looks sharp most places, go with a solid snapback. For shows and weekends, a foam trucker is hard to beat. Then pick a front you like, whether that's a small logo, a patch, or a graphic that starts conversations. Set the snap once, leave the brim flat for a while, and you'll know pretty quickly if it's the one you keep grabbing on the way out the door. FAQ: Flat Bill Hats

Are flat bill hats still in style?

Yes. They've been a staple in skate, moto, car, tattoo, and workwear crowds for years, and clean, cool flat bill hats still look right with most everyday outfits.

Are flat bill hats one size fits all?

Most flat bill snapbacks, including ours, are one size fits most. The snaps adjust to a wide range of head sizes, and the high crown decides how deep and tall the hat sits.

Can you curve a flat bill hat?

You can shape the brim by hand, but it usually won't go back to perfectly flat afterward. Wear it flat for a while first, or start with a curved bill if that's the look you want.

What's the difference between a snapback and a trucker hat?

"Snapback" refers to the adjustable closure in the back, and "trucker" refers to the mesh side and back panels. Plenty of hats are both, like our flat bill trucker snapbacks.

How do you clean a flat bill hat?

Wipe it by hand with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, starting with the sweatband, then let it air dry. Don't machine wash it or put it anywhere near high heat.
